Subdomain or new domain name?
I have a website that generates over 60,000 hits a year. It promotes a local therapy business and gives lots of free information on anxiety and emotional disorders. I don’t want to turn that site into an ad-fest or link based sales site as I feel this would comprimise my professional appeal as a “local” therapist. However with the site generating so many hits I am thinking about the potential for affilliate business selling other peoples anti-anxiety products with links. I would like to build a new site giving free detailed information on how to beat anxiety with suggestions for reputable decent self help products. My domain name is a good one though and I wonder if it is wise to use a subdomain for this purpose or go for an entirely new domain altogether. I’m wondering how subdomains fare in terms of search engine ranking? Will I be penalised for using a sudbdomain? Will it make a difference to World Wide ranking if I use a .co.uk as opposed to a .com?
Hello,
Make a new sub-domain, so that you get hits on that also.
subdomain.yoursite.com
If you are going to make a completely new website, the search engines will not consider it as a part of your website and hence it will not get much or any traffic at all.
A sub-domain is just like any other page on your website and it will also give people coming to it a familiar experience, as th site address will also contain the name of the parent site.
Try adding Ad-sense and Commission Junction ads your site, as I think you will greatly benefit from them.
If you use a .co.uk domain then search engines will think of it as a site which is MOSTLY for UK only and your traffic will reduce, on the other hand if you use a .com domain, search engines will treat you as an international web site and you will get people from all over the world not only from UK.
Why do you think that you will be penalized for using a sub-domain. It is not ill-legal. but first you will have to contact your hosting company to find out if they allow you to make sub-domains, if they don’t then switch to some other Web Host like Server Sea etc.
Hope this helps.
